I thoroughly enjoyed this book. For the first 100 pages I had a lump in my throat as I "experienced" the lead character, Halfdan's, experiences. This is a story of a young man who was born a slave, the illegitimate child of the master. But Halfdan's life takes a drastic turn when the master acknowledges him, bringing him into the family. Halfdan is to become a Viking warrior. There were some things that I particularly liked about this story, one being the way Halfdan viewed the man who was his father, and then his reaction to how others--family members--had a completely different view of the man.
Judson Roberts, who lives in Houston--howdy neighbor, walks a fine line between description and being graphic in the battles battle scenes. But he does an excellent job of making it real without the gore. I definitely recommend this book, and its sequels.
